Hosting and edge comparison

Cloudflare vs Vercel

Pick Vercel when you want zero-configuration hosting for Next.js and other frameworks, with functions and previews managed for you. Pick Cloudflare when you want Workers that run close to each user without data transfer charges, and a WAF, DDoS, and bot edge that can sit in front of any origin, not only apps hosted on it.

One is an application platform with security built in. The other is a security and network edge with an application platform built in. Which one should lead depends on what you are protecting.

When to use each

Use Vercel if your team ships a Next.js app and wants hosting built around that framework. Vercel maintains Next.js, and its documentation says deploying Next.js to Vercel needs no configuration. Vercel Functions run in a region you choose, Washington, D.C. (iad1) by default for new projects, so you can place compute next to your database, while Vercel's CDN caches static content close to users.

Use Cloudflare if you want compute at the edge and an edge that protects more than one platform. By default, a Worker runs in the Cloudflare data center closest to each request, and Placement can run it closer to your database instead. Cloudflare tells new projects to start on Workers rather than Pages, and runs Next.js on Workers through vinext or the OpenNext adapter. vigilbase.com itself is a Next.js app deployed to Cloudflare Workers with OpenNext.

The bigger split is security scope. Vercel's firewall protects the traffic Vercel serves. Cloudflare's WAF, DDoS protection, and bot management sit in front of any origin you point at Cloudflare, whether that is Workers, AWS, Azure, or your own servers.

Firewall, WAF, DDoS, and bot protection

Vercel mitigates layer 3, 4, and 7 DDoS attacks automatically on every plan and does not charge for traffic its firewall blocks; requests served before mitigation, or not recognized as an attack, still count as usage. The Vercel WAF is available on all plans, with custom rules (up to 3 on Hobby, 40 on Pro, and 1,000 on Enterprise), IP blocking, Attack Challenge Mode, and Bot Protection and AI Bots managed rulesets. The OWASP core ruleset is Enterprise only. Configuration changes take effect globally within 300 milliseconds and can be rolled back instantly.

Cloudflare provides unmetered and unlimited DDoS protection at layers 3, 4, and 7 on all plans. Its WAF managed rulesets include the Cloudflare Managed Ruleset and the Cloudflare OWASP Core Ruleset, with Sensitive Data Detection on Enterprise. Bot Management for Enterprise is a paid add-on that scores every request from 1 to 99, so you can write targeted rules, for example challenging low scores on a login page while allowing them on a public blog.

Vercel recommends against putting a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare in front of a Vercel deployment. It says a proxy limits the traffic visibility its firewall and bot protection depend on, adds latency, and complicates caching. If you want Cloudflare as your security edge, run the app on Workers or another origin behind Cloudflare rather than stacking Cloudflare on top of Vercel.

Network and regions

Vercel's CDN has 126 points of presence in 94 cities across 51 countries, in front of 19 compute-capable regions where functions run. Cloudflare's network page lists 348 cities in more than 100 countries and says every service runs in every data center; by default, a Worker runs in the one closest to each request. Counts do not tell you real latency, so measure from your users with your own app.

Pricing models

Vercel's pricing page lists Hobby at $0, Pro at $20 per month, and Enterprise at custom pricing, with Pro developer seats at $20 a month each. Infrastructure is billed by usage: data transferred, requests, and compute duration. On Pro, a monthly usage credit applies first, and CDN usage is billed on demand or through Flat Rate CDN, a fixed monthly capacity tier.

Cloudflare's published Workers pricing starts at a $5 monthly minimum per account on the Paid plan, then bills by requests and CPU time. Cloudflare does not charge for data transfer or bandwidth on Workers, and requests to static assets are free and unlimited. Workers Enterprise accounts are billed on the usage model in their contract; through Vigilbase, Cloudflare is licensed as Cloudflare Enterprise and scoped with Managed Cloudflare operations.

The practical difference: on Vercel, a traffic spike shows up in data transfer and request usage unless you are on a flat tier. On Cloudflare Workers, it shows up in requests and CPU time, not bandwidth.

How Vigilbase fits

Vigilbase licenses Cloudflare Enterprise and operates it as Managed Cloudflare; we do not resell or operate Vercel. If you move an app to Workers, or put Cloudflare in front of an origin you control, we scope the licence and run the WAF, DNS, bot rules, and incidents after go-live. The native Cloudflare integration in Vigilbase OS lets agents watch the edge, remediate in scope, and verify the result. Humans set the authority and handle what is out of scope.

If your team is productive on Vercel and its firewall covers your risk, stay there. We will tell you when the job is an operated Cloudflare edge instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cloudflare cheaper than Vercel?

It depends on your traffic. Cloudflare Workers bill by requests and CPU time, with no charge for data transfer or bandwidth, from a $5 monthly minimum on the Paid plan. Vercel bills per developer seat on Pro, plus usage for data transfer, requests, and compute, with a monthly credit and an optional Flat Rate CDN tier. Can I run Next.js on Cloudflare instead of Vercel?

Yes. Cloudflare recommends vinext for running Next.js on Workers, and the OpenNext adapter is another path. Vercel maintains Next.js and deploys it with no configuration, so test the framework features you rely on, such as caching, middleware, and image handling, in a trial deployment before you move.Cloudflare Enterprise with VigilbaseChoose who operates Cloudflare

Should I put Cloudflare in front of Vercel?

Vercel recommends against it. It says a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare limits the traffic visibility its firewall and bot protection rely on, adds latency, and complicates caching. If you need Cloudflare's WAF and DDoS protection, run the app on Workers or another origin behind Cloudflare instead of stacking both.Application and API protectionHow a web application firewall works

How do Vercel Firewall and Cloudflare WAF compare?

Both include automatic layer 3, 4, and 7 DDoS mitigation on every plan. Vercel's WAF offers custom rules, IP blocking, and bot rulesets on all plans, with the OWASP core ruleset on Enterprise. Cloudflare's WAF has the Cloudflare Managed Ruleset and OWASP Core Ruleset, and Bot Management for Enterprise scores every request. The bigger difference is reach. Does Vigilbase manage Vercel?

No. Vigilbase licenses and operates Cloudflare Enterprise. If you move an app to Cloudflare or put Cloudflare in front of an origin you control, we scope the licence and run the edge after go-live. If your app is staying on Vercel and its firewall covers your risk, we will say so.What Managed Cloudflare includesCloudflare Enterprise with Vigilbase
