Cloudflare alternatives

Cloudflare alternatives by use case

The best Cloudflare alternative depends on the job. For simple per-GB delivery, look at Bunny CDN or KeyCDN. For an application that lives entirely in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, look at that cloud's own edge. For security inside the application, such as runtime protection, look at Imperva. For SASE and Zero Trust for staff, look at Zscaler or Palo Alto Prisma Access, and for managed Next.js hosting, Vercel. Cloudflare still fits best when one edge has to sit in front of every origin, with CDN, WAF, DDoS, bot, and Zero Trust controls on one network.

When an alternative fits better

Pick by the job you need done. Each card links to the side-by-side comparison, which says when the alternative should win.

CDN only, priced per gigabyte

If you need content delivery and little else, a per-GB CDN can be simpler to buy. Bunny CDN prices its standard network per GB by region, with no request fees and a $1 monthly minimum. KeyCDN charges per GB of outbound traffic, with unlimited requests and no commitment. You give up the integrated WAF, bot, and Zero Trust controls.

Applications that live in one cloud

If the application, identity, and private networking all run in one cloud, that cloud's edge integrates most closely. CloudFront does not charge for data transfer from AWS origins such as Amazon S3 and Elastic Load Balancing. Azure Front Door Premium adds Private Link connections to origins. Google Cloud CDN works with Google's external Application Load Balancer and Cloud Armor policies.

Enterprise application security

If you are standardizing on an application security vendor, Akamai's App & API Protector bundles WAF, layer 7 DDoS defense, API discovery, and bot controls. Imperva adds runtime protection from inside the application, and data security products. F5 BIG-IP Advanced WAF keeps WAF policy in your BIG-IP environment, which suits teams that already run F5.

Website security for small sites

If you run WordPress or a small business site and want malware cleanup included, Sucuri combines a cloud-based WAF and an Anycast CDN with unlimited manual malware cleanups on every plan.

Programmable edge

If you want a programmable edge from a CDN specialist, Fastly Compute runs code on a WebAssembly platform, written in languages such as JavaScript, Rust, and Go.

SASE and Zero Trust for staff

If the job is securing how employees reach the internet and private apps, compare Cloudflare One with Zscaler and Palo Alto Prisma Access. Zscaler uses a proxy architecture for internet traffic and brokered one-to-one connections to private apps. Prisma Access extends a Palo Alto Networks firewall policy model, managed from Panorama or Strata Cloud Manager, into the cloud.

Application hosting

If you want managed hosting built around Next.js, Vercel maintains the framework and deploys it with no configuration. Its firewall protects the traffic Vercel serves, and Vercel recommends against putting a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare in front of it.

When Cloudflare still wins

Cloudflare is the better fit when the edge has to serve more than one platform or more than one kind of traffic.
  • One edge in front of every origin

Cloudflare sits in front of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Workers, or your own servers, so a multi-cloud estate gets one set of WAF, DDoS, and bot rules.

  • DDoS protection that is not metered

Cloudflare provides unmetered and unlimited DDoS protection at layers 3, 4, and 7 on all plans.

  • Public apps and staff on one network

Cloudflare One runs Zero Trust access and a secure web gateway on the same network that serves your public apps, from one vendor.

  • Edge compute without bandwidth charges

Workers bill by requests and CPU time, with no charge for data transfer or bandwidth.

  • Close to your users

Cloudflare's network page lists 348 cities in more than 100 countries and says every service runs in every data center.

Cloudflare is the wrong choice when the requirement is native integration with one cloud's identity and private networking, security inside the application or its database, or a hosting platform rather than an edge. The comparisons above say so plainly.

How Vigilbase fits

Vigilbase licenses Cloudflare Enterprise and operates it as Managed Cloudflare, with Core, Priority, and Critical coverage. If Cloudflare is the right edge, we scope the licence and run it after go-live within the authority you set.

If you choose an alternative, Vigilbase OS, the cybersecurity operating system, can still connect several of them: its native connectors include Akamai, Fastly, Imperva, Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks, AWS, and Google Cloud. Log collection and analysis differ by provider, and live response actions run only where Vigilbase OS supports them, which is Cloudflare today.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Cloudflare?

There is no single best alternative; it depends on the job. Per-GB CDNs such as Bunny CDN and KeyCDN suit simple delivery. CloudFront and Azure Front Door suit applications that live in AWS or Azure. Zscaler and Palo Alto Prisma Access suit SASE for staff, and Vercel suits managed Next.js hosting.Cloudflare fits best when one edge has to protect every origin, with CDN, WAF, DDoS, bot, and Zero Trust controls on one network.Cloudflare Enterprise with VigilbaseWhat to check before buying Cloudflare

What is the Cloudflare alternative for Zero Trust and SASE?

Compare Cloudflare One with Zscaler and Palo Alto Prisma Access. Zscaler suits teams already running ZIA and ZPA. Prisma Access suits Palo Alto Networks firewall estates managed from Panorama or Strata Cloud Manager. Cloudflare One fits when you want Zero Trust on the same network as your public apps' CDN and WAF.SASE architecture explainedInternal access and Zero Trust

What are the alternatives to Akamai?

Akamai alternatives to compare include Cloudflare for CDN, WAF, and DDoS protection on one network, Fastly for a programmable edge, and Amazon CloudFront or Azure Front Door when the application lives in one cloud. Compare WAF and bot controls, DDoS coverage, migration effort, and who will operate the platform, not only network size. How a web application firewall worksWhat to check before buying Cloudflare

What are the alternatives to Imperva?

For the web edge, compare Cloudflare and Akamai App & API Protector, which both combine WAF, DDoS, and bot controls. F5 BIG-IP Advanced WAF suits teams already on F5. Imperva's runtime protection and data security work inside the application and its data, so plan to keep or replace those separately. How a web application firewall worksManaged WAF operations and change control

Can I keep AWS or Azure and still use Cloudflare?

Yes. Cloudflare in front of an AWS or Azure origin is a normal pattern: the application stays in its cloud and Cloudflare becomes the public edge. You give up some native integrations on that edge, such as Azure Front Door's Private Link to origins or free data transfer from AWS origins to CloudFront, so review origin access, certificates, and costs first.Cloudflare Enterprise with VigilbaseChoose who operates Cloudflare

Does Vigilbase only work with Cloudflare?

Vigilbase licenses and operates Cloudflare Enterprise; it does not resell the alternatives on this page. Vigilbase OS, the cybersecurity operating system, has native connectors for several of them, including Akamai, Fastly, Imperva, Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks, AWS, and Google Cloud. Live response actions run only where Vigilbase OS supports them, which is Cloudflare today.Supported integrations and operating scopeDiscuss your scope with Vigilbase
