That is the decision. The rest is how you buy the edge, and who operates it after you buy it.
When to use each
Use Cloudflare if the origin can sit on Azure, AWS, GCP, or a mix, and you do not want the CDN tied to one cloud console. Setup is a DNS change. WAF and DDoS sit on the same commercial path: Cloudflare Enterprise licensing and Managed Cloudflare operations, scoped to your requirements. You do not need Azure portal knowledge to run the edge.
Use Azure Front Door if you are already all-in on Azure and the integration is the point. Front Door talks to Azure AD, Private Link, and the Microsoft global network. URL-based routing, SSL offload, and session affinity for stateful Azure apps are native. Standard includes custom WAF rules; managed WAF rule sets, bot protection, and Private Link to origins need Premium. Layer 3 and 4 infrastructure DDoS protection is included; Azure DDoS Protection for origin networks is a separate service. There is no free tier. Billing is usage-based: a monthly base fee per profile, plus request and data transfer meters.
Cloudflare in front of an Azure origin is a normal pattern. You keep the app on Azure and put a platform-agnostic edge in front. You give up native Azure AD and Private Link on that edge. That is the trade.
How they differ
Cloudflare publishes 330+ cities in 100+ countries and routes with anycast. Azure Front Door publishes 192 edge locations across 109 metro cities on the Microsoft network. Coverage is not the whole story. Cloudflare is built to sit in front of anything. Front Door is built to sit inside Azure.
Pricing shape is different. Cloudflare through Vigilbase is Cloudflare Enterprise licensing and managed operations. Front Door is pay-per-use with several meters. If you want a simple commercial path and an operator on the Cloudflare side, that is the Cloudflare route. If Azure networking and identity have to stay in one portal, that is Front Door.
Azure Front Door vs AWS CloudFront
If your shortlist is Azure Front Door and AWS CloudFront, start with where the application runs. Both are global CDNs for static and dynamic content, and both accept origins outside their own cloud. Each works most closely with its own provider's services, security tools, and billing.
Azure Front Door has Standard and Premium tiers. Standard includes custom WAF rules. Premium adds Microsoft-managed WAF rule sets, bot protection, and Private Link connections to origins. Layer 3 and 4 infrastructure DDoS protection is included; Azure DDoS Protection for origin virtual networks is a separate service. Front Door (classic) no longer accepts new profiles and retires on 31 March 2027.
CloudFront uses AWS WAF for application-layer rules and includes AWS Shield Standard against common network and transport layer DDoS attacks at no additional charge. On pay-as-you-go pricing, AWS WAF is billed separately from CloudFront. CloudFront flat-rate plans bundle a distribution with AWS WAF, DDoS protection, Route 53 DNS, and other services for a monthly price without overage charges. Distributions that use AWS Shield Advanced are not eligible, and Lambda@Edge invocations are billed separately.
The pricing shape differs too. Front Door Standard and Premium charge a monthly base fee per profile, plus request and data transfer meters that vary by pricing zone; Premium has a higher request rate. CloudFront pay-as-you-go charges for data transfer out and requests, and rates vary by region. In both cases, data transfer from origins in the same cloud to the edge is free. For edge logic, CloudFront runs code with CloudFront Functions and Lambda@Edge; Front Door uses a rules engine for routing logic at the edge.
Front Door is the natural edge for an Azure estate, and CloudFront for an AWS estate. Cloudflare fits when one edge has to sit in front of Azure, AWS, and other origins, or when you want CDN, WAF, and DDoS run outside a single cloud console.
How Vigilbase fits
Vigilbase runs Cloudflare on the Vigilbase Platform, the agentic cybersecurity operating system; it is not an Azure reseller. Its native Cloudflare integration lets agents watch the edge, remediate in scope, and verify the issue is closed. Humans set the authority and take what is out of scope. We can help you scope Cloudflare Enterprise, deploy it in front of Azure or any other origin, and run WAF, DNS, and incidents after go-live.
We will not tell you Front Door is wrong when Azure AD and Private Link are the requirement. We will tell you when the job is an operated Cloudflare edge instead.
